The Yaya Nyari Literary Estate

Welcome to the Yaya Nyari Literary Estate

A place of stories, memory and reflection. The gate is unlocked and the morning is early. There is no hurry here.

Come in. The path is open.

The Yaya Nyari Literary Estate is a home for stories shaped by memory, land, family, endurance and becoming.

Some began on dust-filled roads.

Some grew beneath trees.

Some waited years before they were ready to be spoken.

You are invited to walk slowly, pause where something calls to you, and return whenever you wish.

The Books

Each book opens onto a different part of the Estate.

Four works are held here, and only four. The Estate keeps what it can account for: a title earns its room when the memory inside it has been checked against the people who lived it.

The finished covers are drawn by hand for the Estate — pencil first, then a thin watercolour wash. Where a volume is still being written, its cover is shown as it stands, mid-work.

“Sit down. I am not going anywhere.”

Said at the bench, more than once

A pencil and watercolour illustration of Yaya Nyari sitting on a weathered wooden bench beneath a woodland tree, listening. An open notebook lies on the bench between her and an unseen visitor, suggested only by a coat sleeve and a teacup at the near edge. Charlie, the small white dog, sleeps at her feet among wild grasses, fallen leaves and a single feather.
P011 · Yaya with the reader — the bench, the notebook, and the place kept for you

Pencil and watercolour on cream paper. Drawn beneath the old tree, Charlie at her feet. Estate collection.

Yaya with the reader

There is a bench under the old tree, and a notebook left open on it. The second seat is not decoration. It is kept.

Most of the work here has been listening. Yaya sits, Charlie settles, and the story arrives in its own time.

The visitor in the picture has no face, because the visitor is you.

Take the other seat
“The lane is longer than it looks, and that is the point of it.”

Letters I Did Not Send for Twenty Years

I found them folded in the back of a hymn book, addressed to a version of myself I had not yet become. They were not unfinished. They were waiting.

The Year the River Went Quiet

It was not drought that changed us. It was learning to listen for water that no longer announced itself.

Yaya Nyari seated on the bank of a still, dark pond, smiling towards the camera and holding a shallow wooden bowl of grain in both hands. Soft daylight lifts her face while the reeds, trees and water behind her fall gently out of focus. Every crease and fold of her earth-toned patterned dress is visible, as is the grain of the turned wooden bowl.

Meet Yaya Nyari

Yaya Nyari is a writer, storyteller and steward of memory.

Her work moves between rural Zimbabwe, family life, survival, leadership and the landscapes through which identity is formed.

She writes not to remain in the past, but to bring its lessons into fuller conversation with the present.

Stay a while.

Some stories ask to be read quickly.

Others ask us to sit beside them.

The Estate will still be here when you return.
